International Picture of the Year

1st Place:
Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News

When 2nd Lt. James Cathey's body arrived at the Reno Airport , Marines climbed into the cargo hold of the plane and draped the flag over his casket as passengers watched the family gather on the tarmac.

During the arrival of another Marine's casket last year at Denver International Airport , Major Steve Beck described the scene as so powerful: 'See the people in the windows? They sat right there in the plane, watching those Marines. You gotta wonder what's going through their minds, knowing that they're on the plane that brought him home,' he said 'They will remember being on that plane for the rest of their lives. They're going to remember bringing that Marine home. And they should.'

1st Runner Up:
Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News

The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. 'I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it,' she said. 'I think that's what he would have wanted.'

Hello New World: Interview with CK

Every legend has an official introduction. A watershed moment where everyone takes notice.

“Brenda’s Got a Baby” turned a former backup dancer into cult icon Tupac Shakur. The “Flava In Ya Ear” video transformed a Brooklyn Catholic school boy into a larger than life don and King of New York. Two dopeboyz in a Cadillac rode “Elevators” to the top floor of pop music superstardom. In a genre full of legends who overstay their welcome though, is there any room for a fresh young talent to change the game?

Enter CK.

April 20th (4/20) National Day of Puffing

Does 420 really mean anything? Here are some known myths of 4/20.

* Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420. The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.
* There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana. Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.
* April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day. Well, it is now; but that wasn't the origin.
* April 20th is Hitler's birthday. Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.
* April 20th is the date of the Columbine school shootings. This happened after the term was already in use.
* 4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland. Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.

My Thesis Topic: The Role of Political Insitutions in Economic Development

So anyone that knows me knows I've been putting off my thesis. I mean its sad I'm blogging about my thesis instead of writing about it. I'd rather perform, write poetry, songs, etc. I went to procrastinate on twitter and someone hit me up telling me to work on my thesis. So I figured if random people on twitter know I'm procrastinating then maybe I should get to work. However, I have a really cool topic: The role of institutions in economic development with case studies on Malaysia and Egypt. I'm working on it as we speak I promise....
